Vice Principal Hazel Robertson opened the evening and spoke about her own journey to Borders College, reminiscing about the songs and films that were around when she graduated in 1989. Head of Borders College Students’ Association Amy Brydon also spoke about her own VQ in Management and how this has helped her to become a better manager within her role.

Special awards and certificates and were presented to recognise the outstanding achievements of students throughout the course of their study. This year’s awards were presented by Hazel Robertson and Director of Business Development Deirdre McKendry to the following students:

Exceptional Achievement Award - Abbie Duncan

This award recognises students who have surpassed expectations, working above and beyond the requirements of their award and producing work of an excellent standard.

Abbie is the first Foundation Apprentice to complete her award with BDU. This exciting opportunity for young people has allowed Abbie to enter into her subject of choice whilst still attending school.

Not only did she work to a high standard in her SSCYP 6, she did this while completing higher level qualifications and gaining work experience within a childcare setting.

She also had to make the transition from her first year of the Foundation Apprenticeship award in a classroom situation, to working independently with distance support, which is not always easy. She did this well and completed ahead of time due to her determination and hard work.

Abbie clearly loves working in this sector and has chosen to continue on her journey of learning in childcare by enrolling on the HND course at Borders College.

Special Recognition Award – David Murray

This award is for a student who has achieved their work through sheer hard work and determination. They may not have found their award easy but have persevered and achieved their goals through persistence and dedication.

David, from SB Cares, was nominated by his assessor for this award.

Throughout the time David was undertaking his MA in Business and Administration, he demonstrated a high level of commitment to his course, submitting evidence regularly and within the deadlines set. David did find some of the elements of the course challenging but, by working together with his colleagues and tutor, he overcame these. Over the last few months, within his office, they were a member of staff short and David was also staying late at work in order keep up with service demands but he still managed to successfully complete the course within the allocated time. Well done David.

Student of the Year – Euan Aikman

This award recognises the student who has demonstrated success both in their award and within their workplace. They always go the extra mile and uphold the values of the College and their workplace. They have a positive attitude and approach to their work and life.

Euan began work in a school kitchen in 2018 and went on to SBC HQ to work in the staff restaurant. Throughout his award Euan has demonstrated a positive attitude and worked hard to ensure he has prepared thoroughly for all assessments. He has practised recipes and meal planning and worked closely with his assessor and colleagues to ensure he was able to meet the criteria for the award. Euan has approached his qualification with a smile and has always been prepared to go the extra mile to achieve his goals.

This year’s certificates were presented by Deirdre McKendry to the following students:

Euan Aikman - SVQ 2 Professional Cookery
Tracey Louise Blacklock - Human Biology
Joanne Culley - SVQ Business and Administration at SCQF Level 5
Abbie Duncan - Social Services Children and Young People at SCQF Level 6
Natasha Elizabeth Garrett - Counselling: An Introduction
Imogen Heard - English: Spoken Language
David Murray - SVQ Business and Administration at SCQF Level 5
